Craft Your Own Mythical Oasis: A Miniature Dragon Habitat Tutorial

Have you ever wanted a pet dragon but didn’t have enough space? Today we’re going to make this dream come true by creating the perfect tiny home for your miniature Gem Joy dragon. Want to see this adorable creature come alive in its habitat? Watch the full video tutorial on Instagram here!

Materials:

  • Glass Container - Any open-top glass container wide enough to fill with your materials will work, from an up-cycled milk container, fish bowl, or jam jar! Bonus points if the original glass was fire-blown.
  • Little Stones - Mini rocks with space between them will give your terrarium proper water drainage and air circulation. Marbles, gravel, beach stones, or purchased rocks will do the trick.
  • Soil - A handful of potting soil will provide a strong base for your greenery
  • Natural Materials: Twigs, small branches, and driftwood add a touch of rustic charm. Dried moss creates an inviting bed for your dragon. Consider adding dried leaves, small pinecones, or even artificial flowers for a pop of color.
  • Optional Extras: Let your imagination soar! Tiny gems, craft materials, artificial vines, or even miniature furniture like a dollhouse teacup can make your dragon feel at home.

Step-by-Step Guide:

  1. Gather your materials: collect the materials that will make your dragon feel cozy in its new home. A nature walk and a search around your home will ensure you have all you need.
  2. Clean Your Container:  Wash your chosen container thoroughly with warm soapy water and ensure it's dry before starting. Use a lid if you include moss since it will keep your container moist. Do not use a lid if you use plants such as succulents that prefer dry climates. If your container is tall, consider laying it on its side for more surface area.
  3. Create a Drainage Layer: Add a layer of pebbles to the bottom of the container. Put your biggest rocks in first. Aim for a depth of roughly 1-2 inches, depending on the size of your container.
  4. Prepare the Soil:  Moisten the potting soil slightly (think damp, not soggy) and spread it evenly over the pebbles.  Give your plants enough soil to sink their little roots into, yet leave at least 2-3 inches of space at the top for decoration. Gently tilt the container backward to create a slight incline of soil from one side of your container to the other.
  5. Add Greenery: Place the larger pieces of driftwood or twigs on the soil.  Layer in the moss, creating a lush bed for your dragon to rest upon.  Scatter smaller twigs, pebbles, and leaves to build a natural-looking landscape.
  6. Release Your Inner Decorator: Get creative with your dragon’s dwelling. Our dragon likes to read and eat treats, so we put some books and a cake near its bed. And don't forget to incorporate your dragon's favorite colors throughout your design!
  7. Prepare Your Gem Joy:  Carefully place your Gem Joy in the habitat.  Nestle it amongst the moss or perch it atop a piece of driftwood, giving it space to shine in your dragon sanctuary.
  8. Welcome Your Dragon Home: Open your Gem Joy app and welcome your dragon sensation to their new home. Tap the screen to see how they play in their habitat.

Caring for Your Miniature Dragon Habitat:

  • Moisture Maintenance: Mist the inside of the container lightly every few days if you have moss inside, and every week or so if you have succulents. Observe the condensation on the walls; too much indicates a need to reduce misting, while very little might signal the need for more.
  • Sunlight is Essential: Choose a location with indirect sunlight for your habitat. Avoid direct sunlight, as it can dry out the moss and overheat the environment.
  • Trimming and Cleaning: Over time, the moss or any added plants might require trimming. Remove any dead leaves or debris to maintain a clean and healthy environment.

Of course, the most important thing you can do is keep your dragon happy.  Make sure to play with them often, and share them with your friends.
